The Disney Cruise line is one of the ventures of the Walt Disney company which focuses on providing family entertainment. An analysis of the Disney Cruise line brand indicates that its revenues and market share be taken into consideration. However, Disney does not report the revenues and expenditures of the Cruise line separately. Thus experts’ estimates have to depended upon in order to gauge the worth of the cruise line.According to some analysts:Based on what Disney Cruise Line has reported — about 390,000 passengers a year and an average of $200 in revenue a day per passenger — the business likely grosses more than $312 million a year, or $156 million per ship. (Riley-Katz, 2007) Disney likes to refer to itself as ‘A leader in the family cruise segment’ (Disney Cruise News, 2009).And the values it highlights are the family experience with fun activities for all age groups. Disney Cruise line boasts of kids’ activities, teenage entertainment activities as well as something to do for adults on their own. It is because of the family focus that Disney cruises are priced higher than other cruise lines and focus on high quality recreational activities aboard the ships. The cruise line’s competitive line of differentiation is its focus on the niche of the family market rather than an adult market exclusively as most cruises are advertised for. Other cruise lines generally are for adults and couples. The high-point of t he commercial is that the child says that his baby brother is a little souvenir from the Disney cruise that they took a year ago. The advertising focuses on Disney creating a magical experience for the entire family which is unforgettable.As in the TV commercial, the child is seen to remember the experience and relate its events as if he had recently been on the trip. This depicts that the Disney Cruise line wants to position its vacations as an unforgettable experience for the parents as well as the children. Moreover, children are more prone to forgetting events but Disney has projected an image where it says that even children remember the experience. Strengths and Weaknesses The strengths of the brand include the huge brand equity that is associated with the parent company. Consumers view Disney as brand oriented towards families and children.Thus Disney comes across as a credible brand that will not malign the minds of children and a brand that parents can trust their children can learn from. The Cruise line with its strong endorsement from the parent company depicts the values that the consumers hold dear in their view of Disney. Thus its main strength lies in the strong brand name. Moreover, the cruise line is priced at premium rates implying high quality services. Further when most cruise lines are focusing on people on a honeymoon or people who have retired Disney has been able to capture the niche of family cruise.the potency of the cruise lines also lies in the fact that being family oriented, the occupancy in the ships is higher than on other cruise lines and that allows for lowering of costs while revenue increases. The weaknesses of the brand are basically its very short fleet of two ships which restricts the number of excursions that Disney can undertake. This is one reason for its market share of merely 1. 8 percent. Along with this is the fact that Disney recently ordered two more ships to be built and given the recent economic downturn and es calating prices, Disney could suffer losses in terms of high prices charged by ship builders.According to estimates the two new ships will cost more than $800 million per ship. Setting: The observation took place in the child’s home. The child’s home is a semi-detached house in a housing estate Immediate Context: This observation took place in the kitchen. TC is seated at the kitchen table finishing his homework. His father is nearby washing up at the sink. The observation took place at 2.30 in the afternoon. An hour after TC returned home from school. TC’s brother and sister are running around the kitchen while another brother is sitting at the table playing Lego. Name of Child: TC Brief description of the child: TC is a male aged 6 years and 5 months. He has been in school since September 12 months ago. He has one older brother (aged nine) three young brothers (twin 3 year olds and a 2 year old) he has  a younger sister also (aged 2 years). Because of the number in his family he is very active and talkative. Aim of observation: The aim of this observation is to observe TC for a period of time of 10 minutes in order to assess his language development. Observation: TC is sitting on a chair at the kitchen table finishing off his homework he is drawing objects that begin with â€Å"I†. He asks how to spell ice-cream, igloo and ice as these are the shapes he’s drawing. He takes out a sheet filled with words to learn. He is now looking at his words and pronouncing them. I feel that I achieved this aim very well and that generally TC’s language development appears to be within the normal range for his age. Certainly, TC’s word pronunciation is accurate. He does make little errors tough e.g. he says â€Å"ate† for â€Å"eight†. This is usual for his stage of development. While children between four and five years pronounce most words correctly, they â€Å"may show some immature sound substitutions† (Flood 2010) One of the theorists I have studied is Skinner (1957), Skinner believed â€Å"that  learning, including language learning, occurs as a result of reinforcement.† Another theorist I have studied is Bruner(1915-). Bruner believed first-hand experience allows children to develop their ideas and thinking, he called this â€Å"enactive thinking†. Bruner stress the importance of the child’s environment in language development. He believes â€Å"The adults and more able peers in a child’s life provide what he calls a language acquisition support system (LASS).† Motherese, recasting, expanding and labelling all part of this system . Key stage of language development Gross Motor Skills †¢ Child tries to understand the meaning of words. The child uses adverbs and prepositions. The child talks confidently, and with more and more fluency. †¢ The child uses language creatively. The child adds vocabulary all the time. †¢ The child is an explorer and communicator; he or she begins to be able to define objects by their function – for example, â€Å"what is a bicycle† â€Å"you cycle a bicycle†. Fine Motor Skills †¢ A young child does not learn well in isolation from other children and adults. The child begins to share as he or she learns. Sharing sharpens and broadens the child’s thinking. This helps the child to learn better – for example, he begins to understand book language, and that stories have characters and a plot (the narrative). †¢ The child begins to realise that different situations require different ways of talking. The child establishes a sense of audience (who he or she is talking to). In summary, TC’s language development in terms of both fine and gross motor skills seems to be just on target and have reached the developmental milestones expected for his age. Personal Learning Gained †¢ I learned more about children’s language development. I know understand the terminology of â€Å"labelling†, â€Å"semantics†, â€Å"syntax†, â€Å"recasting† and â€Å" expanding†. †¢ I learned that in order to do so accurately, a tape recording with transcription is advisable. Unrequited Love

Unrequited love is a love that is not openly reciprocated. The one who is adored may or may not be aware of his/her admirer’s romantic affections. They also may ignore their admirer out of lack of interest or the presence of another lover. â€Å"Let no one who loves be called altogether unhappy. Even love unreturned has its rainbow† (J. M. Barrine, The Little Minister). This certain type of love has been depicted as an unselfish and uncomplaining willingness to accept suffering and humility.Psychiatrist, Eric Berne, considered that ‘†the man who is loved by a woman is lucky indeed, but the one to be envied is he who loves, however little he gets in return†. Some may see this as a negative, and while it does have negative effects, it also shows such selflessness. A quality many people in our society now lack is compassion, love, and understanding. It is truly a quality that is envied by others. Some may think, â€Å"How is it possible to love someone w ho does not even know you exist? , well that just goes to show how much they invest in caring for other people no matter what benefits they will receive. However, there are also negative effects of an unrequited love. Research suggests that some negative emotions the rejector feel are emotions such as: anxiety, frustration, and guilt. Founding father of psychoanalysis, Freud, pointed out that â€Å"when a woman sues for love, to reject and refuse is a distressing part for a man to play†. He is basically stating that it causes the suitor, male or female, pain and agony to reject their admirer.Now in most cases the unrequited lover usually always retain some hope that he/she will change their mind one day, however, the rejector's outcomes or effects are predominantly all harmful to their well-being. While the beloved suffer from negative effects, so do the admirer’s, and they are much more harmful. If the unrequited lover has trouble expressing their emotional needs it m ay lead to feelings such as depression, low self-esteem, envy or jealousy towards the beloved, anxiety and rapid mood swings between depression and extreme happiness.We constantly see examples of unrequited love today in movies, books and songs. They all often portray the positive effects once the rejector comes to his or her senses and decides to be with the admirer. However, this is not always the case; In fact, most of the time the admirer never gets the satisfaction of having a relationship with their love. Although, with positive examples like this it makes it easy to understand why the admirer persists after facing rejection.It is all because of the hope they continue to have. In terms of the feelings of the hopeful one, they feel about the same amount of pain as does someone who is going through the breakup of a romantic relationship without ever having had the benefit of being in that relationship. While some may say the negative effects of an unrequited love outweigh the po sitive effects, the unrequited lover posses one of the most important characteristics, which is selflessness.

Industrial Training Report Department Of Civil Engineering Industrial Training Report REINFORCEMENT Reinforcement is used to take tensile force and as well as compressive force. Only reinforcement bars carry tensile stress where compressive stress is carried by both reinforcement bars and concrete depending on the situation carry load. Normally steel bar is used as reinforcement because it has enough strength and steel bars are available at required strength with fair cost. In early days wooden bar also was used for this purpose. Concrete is weak in tension and strong in compression. Reinforcement is provided to enhance the moment carrying capacity of structure. Tor steel bars are used as reinforcement material at our site. T-32, T-25, T-20, T-16 and T-10 bars which are imported from Singapoor, Malasiya and local product also and length of 6m and 12m, are used in our site. The reinforcement is laid according to the structural drawings. After that the following checks are done. Spacing Diameter type of bars No of stirrups No of links Lap length Starter bars if needed Cover blocks Covering Regular binding of bars together Placement of tension compression bars If there are any construction joints, they should be chipped and cleaned to bond properly. INDICATION OF REINFORCEMENT IN DRAWING Engineering drawings is a language of communication of details. Therefore there is a standard to indicate reinforcement in drawing such as 6T16-101-8 B or T This means that ‘6’- No of bars ‘T’ Indicate tor steel ‘16’- Indicate the diameter of the bar in mm ‘101’- Indicate the bar mark ‘8’- Indicate the distance between two bars in inches ‘T’- Indicate the position of the bar (top bar) ‘B’ Indicate the position of the bar (bottom bar) BAR BENDING WORK Bar bending is carried by machinery method and manual. For minor works it was done manually with the help of cutting lever. Skilled bar benders are involved in this process. The bar bender do his job according to bar schedule which is given to him. It includes Size type of bar Number of bar Dimensions Bending length Crank length position Shape of bar Bar mark Name type of structural member Place Grids between those grids it is used For transferring the stress at the end of bars have to be welded or lapped at the end. The lap should not be less than the anchorage length. The minimum length of lap in tension and compression is 45 times of diameter of the bar. The types and numbers of bars are planed earlier and cut. Sufficient numbers of stirrups are also made by bar benders. Before placing the steel bars, they are cleaned well. It should not be allowed to move when concreting. Cover blocks are used to place reinforcement bars with cover. Cover blocks are made up of 1:3 cement sand mortars. Cover blocks are not removed after concreting and it is important element. Its’ strength should not be less than to strength of concrete. Sizes of cover blocks vary according to the structural members. The cover block thickness of, slab is 25mm, beam, column, lift wall retaining wall are 30mm and shoring side water retaining structures are 40mm. When beams are bound it is kept out of the pit of beam for the easy of work. First top bars of beam and stirrups are bound. Then other bars are inserted and bound. While reinforcement of beam is brought down after finishing the work, very nicely it is get down without affecting the formwork. Usually for all structural members lap is not allowed at a same level for all bars. And alternative bars having laps at a same level. But columns have laps at a same level because of difficulties of binding of long bars and reinforcement is crowded at the junction of beam and column. Lap is avoided at critical position of tension and compression. SCHEDULE OF BARS Schedule of bars gives the number of bars required in each type for a reinforcement network. By having bar schedule following advantages can be achieved. Time saving in the reinforcement work Amount of steel required can be exactly calculated. So purchase in excess or high transport cost can be avoided. Wasting of cut off pieces can be reduced give more efficiency as reinforcements are expensive. Laps occurring in tension portion can be avoided. Bar benders can easily understand. Easy to handle at site. While we make a bar schedule we should know about the tension and compression how to acting on the member. And lap should not be allowed to be in the tension portion and critical compression portion also. When we are doing schedule for slab if part of slab is finished for the balance work we take site measurement for required length of reinforcement. The typical lap position for beam is shown below: SLAB Slab is a kind of plate, which can carry loads. Basically slabs are divided in to two types as one-way spanning slab and two-way spanning slab. Depending on the type of slab the amount of reinforcement, which placed to resist the moments, is different. Most probably slabs are reinforced only for tension and compression is supported by concrete. Usually for middle of slab reinforcement is placed at bottom and edge (near the beam or supports) of slab reinforcement is placed at top. But basement floor slab reinforcement is placed in opposition way. Therefore middle of slab reinforcement is at top and edge (around the beam) of slab reinforcement is at bottom. Between the top bar and bottom bar of the slab should be maintained while concreting it may be disturbed due to load which is the load of workers, instrument and concrete flow pipe. Overall reinforcement cover is checked by leveling instrument. To keep the space between those two bars space bar is used. BEAM Beam is the load-transferring member building, which transfer load from slab to column. In the beams tension is supported by reinforcement and compression is supported by concrete and reinforcement. In most occasions, middle of beam undergoes sagging moment and beam nearby support undergoes hogging moment. For supporting the higher tension, additional tension bars are inserted at bottom of middle and top of edge therefore nearby support. But basement floor reinforcement is in the opposition way. For basement floor beams additional tension bars are inserted at top of middle and bottom of nearby pile caps. While bars are bound to the beam space between two bars should not be less than 1.5 times bar diameter. This minimum space is required for, to form an enough bonding between reinforcement concrete and to minimize the damage while impact load is applied on the beam reinforcement take dynamic movement. COLUMN Column is the main member to transfer the load to foundation. Column is mainly designed for carrying the compression. But it is designed to support the moment also while considering the eccentricity and side force therefore wind load. In column compression is carried by concrete and reinforcement. Column reinforcement is mainly designed for support the compression and small amount of tension that is caused by moment. For large size bars (T 32, T25, etc.) lap is held at same level. Due to the handling problem and if the lap is in the junction of column and beam concreting is very difficult some time huney homb may occur. Column typical lap is shown in the figure 7.4. Probably most of columns reinforcements are symmetrical about two axes. First when bars are bound verticality of bar is maintained. SECTIONAL VIEW Stair case   Stair case is same as slab reinforcement. Therefore tension reinforce is provided at bottom and at the edges tension reinforcement is provided at top. Here in addition to slab some tension reinforcement is provided junctions. STIRRUP Stirrup is main element in supporting the shear force. If we consider column, stirrups are used for to hole the vertical bar together. Due to load column mar bulk in this situation cracks may appear in vertical direction. Without happening bulk stirrups bound the column. In the beam, there is more probability to happen the shear failer because it transfer load horizontally. Beam is not a continuous element that is the compound of cement, sand, aggregate and reinforcement. These elements are bound by bond, which may fail in transferring the shear stress. Of cause we use stirrups to carry out the shear stress for beams and columns. In our site stirrups are made by bar bending machine. Stirrup shape is shown in the figure 7.6 Industrial Training Report Industrial Training Report INTRODUCTION In this duration 20/4/2009 until 2/10/2009, I had been assigned to a company name SILVERLAKE SYSTEM SDN BHD, which is located at LEVEL 2A KPMG TOWER FIRST AVENUE, BANDAR UTAMA 47800 PETALING, SELANGOR to complete my internship. On the 1st day, I have been brief by their staffs at there about the rules of company and how their organization works. After that, we had assigned to follow different supervisors and department. I had been assigned to clients side which is at KWSP building under team LEGAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS). On the 2nd day, I have to go there to continue my internship until 2/10/2009. Basically, my team at KWSP building is handling about a website name legal/panel that can let users/employees to perform their tasks. Those tasks are like approve, assign, and reject, accept case; work with case status, criminal, civil, court action; perform some calculation fees, date; some reports for review and etc. My team have 4 senior staffs and me 1 trainee. They had briefly told me how they perform their tasks and teach me a lot of knowledge about working. Software Exposure (software used, projects or assignments completed) During this industry training, I had used some software to do my tasks and projects. Example of software, iseries Navigator, IBM RPGLE software, Legal System, XML generator, SCITE version 1.63, Microsoft word, Microsoft excel, Microsoft power point and hotmail (email). They had taught me how to use some software that I dont know, so that I can do my tasks. Following, I will briefly describe how I use the software to do my tasks. iSeries Navigator I briefly describe iSeries Navigator is a powerful graphical interface to easily work with the iSeries server. To use iSeries Navigator, we need to have server connections that connect to the environments of our work. So we need a login ID and password to login to the environments, after we login, there will be a list of functions that we can use for perform our tasks. Example of functions like, security, network, databases, backup and etc, all those functions still have sub functions like run SQL script and etc. In here, I had been assigned some tasks on write SQL statements by using SQL Performance Monitor which is sub function of Databases tasks. This function can allows us to keep track of the resources that SQL statements use. Basically, I using this software to run some SQL statements, retrieve some useful data records to do reference, update, insert or delete some data records in the database. Example like update users details, insert new users details, for checking purpose an d etc. IBM RPGLE software This is complex software that about back end system and also related to database. I didnt learn this software before so they have to teach me more about this software and some useful commands to do my tasks. Example of the useful or important commands like dspff= display file fields, call function, and etc. This software is related to database, back end system and is very important, so they just teach me some simple and basic commands to retrieve some data, information for me to refer. I usually use this software to retrieve some useful information from database. For example, after I enter some command like dspff lg8068i (files name), then the system will show out the fields name, length, position and text of the file we choose. This mean if we change the interface of the modules, example like want to add more fields or update something, then we have to use tis system to add the fields that we need. Example like we wan modify the text fields length, we also need to modify using this system, change the length of the text that we want. After do any changes, then we have to generate the XML file again and replace it to the server. When generate XML file, we also have to refer the information from here. Legal System Actually it is system software of a web page, this system include screen display like views, pages, menus and etc; Scripts like javascripts, VBscripts; system customisation, system maintenance, user password validate and etc. All of these are use to build the EPF web page that we using now. This system software can let us create webpage, example like create buttons, textbox, dropdownlist, and write coding like javascripts,VBscripts, SQL query and etc. I had been assigned to write some javascript code for example some functions, event those things during my industri training. For example, I had to use this software to write some code to create a function for a dropdownlist to perform certain events. After select the value from dropdownlist, the function will perform some action according to the value that we select, for example, enabled a text field for us to modify and update the information or display some information that we need. Im also writing the coding for others functions, ex ample like if-else statement, display, get value and etc. Besides that, this system software also can let us maintain users detail for example users password, report maintenance. There is a part name maintenance view page for us to create, write or modify our coding and also test our coding or find error. After all had done, then save it in this system, then we can go the related page to test the function that we did just now. XML Generator XML Generator is software that can let us generate XML file, XML was designed to transport and store data, with focus on what data is. XML document is a string of characters. This XML Generator is done by that staffs who works at here. The XML file is save as notepad format, so we can edit it by using notepad. When we need to generate a XML file for a module, we need to login to RPGLE system to retrieve the data attribute from related table, for example like data field, length, data type and etc, and then copy the whole table to notepad and save it. After that, copy the notepad file to source folder of XML generator. After that, we can key in the request name, transaction code, action code, input field file, un-repeated field file, repeated field file and etc. After complete build, we need to replace this XML file for the old XML file in the server. There will be an interface of XML generator software at appendix part. We need to generate again the XML file if we had change data type ; field or data attribute in the database, for example, add more data field, or like changed the field length of some data. After finish doing this, then had to doing testing on the field that we had modify or added. For example, we had change the data field length of description field, and then we need to test whether the field length can store the data that we had already set. XML basically is use for web services, parse data, and store data. SciTE version 1.63 SciTE is software that we using here for write coding. SciTE have the feature of automatic syntax styling and it can hold multiple files in memory at one time but only one file will be visible. There are two panes in SciTE, the editing pane and the output pane. The output pane is located either to the right of the editing pane or below it. SciTE can perform commands to compile or run source files with the output from these commands directed into the output pane. SciTE currently is able to syntax style these languages: C++, C#, javascript, HTML and etc. We using this software to write those coding for example like javascript, SQL scripts, and others coding. We are using this software because it support many programming language and also have automatic syntax styling. Besides that, this software also can let us easily write our coding for example like it can let us easily control the alignment of coding and have coding line calculation; find and search function. All these functions can let us write coding with more efficient and effective. Microsoft word It is a useful software and is using for documentation tasks. I using Microsoft word to do documentation about print screen of all the modules or sub modules of the system, then briefly explain what is the condition and name of each of the modules. This documentation is done for users to let them understand the condition of those modules and how to perform their task by using those modules in the system. Besides that, merge field also done by Microsoft word, after insert merge field, we can show those information from database. Press alt+f9 will show the coding that hidden and we can modify and update it. Microsoft Excel I use Microsoft excel to write SQL Statements. They give me some task like write SQL scripts, they will give me all the information that I need to update and I will write my SQL scripts like update statement in excel. Actually write in excel is for backup purpose. Microsoft Power Point I am using this software to do some power point slide for user. In this power point slide, I have included some diagram example like activity diagram, and some flow diagram. I also using power point to show the flow of those activities, follow step by step and sequence so that the user can understand how the flow of activities go. Hotmail (E-Mail) My team was doing a project on sending inform email to users so they use my e-mail for testing purpose. I using my email to test the system is it will send a correct email to the user after doing some action; accept any case, any status changes or etc in the system. I have to check is it the information of the email that send to my mail is accurate when refer to the task that I had did in the module of the system. For example, I have to check the information like employees no, name, case files no, date and etc is it same with the case that I perform those tasks. After I perform some tasks, it will send an e-mail to my hotmail to inform me those latest update. Hardware Exposure (software used, projects or assignments completed) During this industry training, I have been provided a desktop with specification pentium[r] 4 cpu, 3.06GHz, 1 GB ram and 80GB hard disk. Besides that, there is a share printer that can let us use for print documents. Environment Exposure (e.g. working relationship with colleagues, clients, management, etc) During this whole industri training, I was assigned to KWSP building to continue my training. The location of KWSP building is around Masjid Jamek, I always go work by taking LRT from Wangsa Maju, so it is very convenient. The environment of the KWSP is very good and also provides us a lot of good facilities. Besides that, the working environment is also very clean and comfortable. There are 4 trainees including me that had been assigned to KWSP building to continue our training. All of us had been assigned to different departments and do our tasks according to our team. For example, main task for BDS team is about database and our LEGAL team is about front-end like SQL, retrieve data show to user. My team need to communicate with users (workers) from KWSP because we need to get feedback from them about our system that performs tasks for them. So our team got a good relationship with those users from KWSP to make sure that the systems can perform tasks successfully without errors. Co lleagues in my team are very good and friendly. After they giving me some tasks to do, they will explain to me how to do and also teach me if I dont know how to do. When I got some problems or errors, they will teach me how to find those errors and teach me how to solve those problems. They always teach me a lot of useful knowledge about working and guide me when I had some problems. I really had learnt a lot of knowledge and gain a lot of working experience from them. Conclusion Finally I had finished my industry training in this semester and now is already started a new semester to continue study. During my training semester, I really had learnt a lot of knowledge from my colleagues and some working experience from them. I am glad to become their trainee because they really teach me a lot and when I got facing some problems, they willing to teach me how to solve it or help me to solve those errors. This industry training really provides a lot of benefits for me. During this training, I had a chance to learning from them while working, besides that, I also know more about the working environment at outside. Other than gain knowledge about the programming language from my working place, I also learn more about teamwork from them. In working environment, work as a team is important for complete a project, so teamwork is important for working. Working is not same as study, in working environment; we need to have a good communication skill because when working, communications between employees or clients are very important. I really learnt a lot of extra knowledge from my colleagues during my industry training, I really appreciate it and thanks for them in teaching me and guide me along this whole training. Besides that, I also thanks college for provide us a industry training so that we can learnt some knowledge and working experience before we going out for the real working environment. Week 1 (From 1-6-09 to 5-6-09 ) Last week I had learned and write some SQL statements for the program to retrieve data from the database. So this week, I continue doing my work on SQL statements. In this task, I am using a program name SQL analysis to check whether my SQL statements is correct and can retrieve data from database. By using this program, we can update and check the data in the database that we want. So in this week, they give me a task to update those selected data in the database by using this program. Besides that, I also have to retrieve those selected data from database and check whether those data are correct. Week 2 (From 8-6-09 to 12-6-09 ) At last week, they already teach me how to generate XML files. We need to generate again the XML file if we had change data type, field or data attribute in the database, for example, add more data field, or like changed the field length of some data. They are using the RPGLE system to add data field or change those datas field length for a table. So after they had done any changed to the table, we had to generate again the related XML file by using the XML generator. After generate again the new XML file will be replace the old XML file and store it in the server so that the interface of the web page will be changed too. After finish doing this, then had to doing testing on the field that we had modify or added. For example, we had change the data field length of description field, and then we need to test whether the field length can store the data that we had already set. Week 3 (From 15-6-09 to 19-6-09 ) In this week, they teach me how to find out what are those errors and see the error occur in which data field. In the server, there was a folder store the trace file that can let us know what is the related attribute included when we perform an event by clicking a button. This trace file is keep trace the event that we perform according to the users ID that we use for testing. In this trace file, we can know which field had occurred errors, for example we had key in the information in the field and we found that got error occur when we try to save it. If this happened, we can go trace file and find out which data field had occurred error. This is very useful because we can easily and quickly find out the field that had occurred error and can fix it. Every time we click a button for example like save, next confirm and others, then the trace file will keep track what is the data included and where the data store. Week 4 (From 22-6-09 to 30-6-09 ) In this week, I do the same tasks like what had I done last 3 weeks. After they did any change for example like add new data attribute or modify data attribute like length, then I had to generate again the related XML file and replace the old XML file and store it into the server. Week 1 (From 1-7-09 to 10-7-09) In this week, they are giving me a task about documentation. All I have to do is print screen all the modules or sub modules of the system and paste those capture screens in Microsoft word. After that, I have to briefly explain what is the condition and name of each of the modules. This documentation is do for users to let them understand the condition of those modules and how to perform their task by using those modules in the system. I have to briefly explain the steps, what those conditions are, and what the modules can perform. I also have to briefly explain the selections or actions that the modules have. Actually this documentation is do for those users to understand what is the use of the modules and how they can perform their task like key in details, date, and other information by using the system. Week 2 (From 13-7-09 to 17-7-09) In this week, they teach me how to use the software, name iSeries Navigator. This is software that can connect to our server and it is also link to database. In this software, there is many function that related to network, databases, file system, backup, and some basic operations. They briefly explain to me about what those important functions are and what the purpose of doing those functions. After that, they giving me a task to do, it is about run Sql script and retrieves and check data. The first step I have to do is write my Sql script in excel according to the condition that I need. After that, they give me a condition and i have to write update and insert Sql script in excel. After finish write, I have to make sure that those Sql statement is correct before run the Sql script. When run Sql script, if got any errors, we can refer to the error messages and fix it. The purpose of doing the Sql script in excel is because we need to do a backup copy of the Sql script that we write or modify. Beside that, we also can use tis software to run some Sql statement to retrieve or check data that we need. In this week, I have learn more about the back end system which is RPG system SiPFS batch menu, I had learn this last few weeks ago, but this week is learn more command and know more about the system. Example of the useful or important commands like dspff= display file fields, call, and etc. After I enter some command like dspff lg8068i(files name), then the system will display the file fields from the library that store the file. For example the system will show out the fields name, length, position and text of the file we choose. The system will show all the fields name, length, position and text definition that using in the module. This mean if we change the interface of the modules, example like want to add more fields or update something, then we have to use tis system to add the fields that we need. Example like we wan modify the text fields length, we also need to modify using this system, change the length of the text that we want. After do any changes, then we have to gener ate the XML file again and replace it to the main server. Week 3 (From 20-7-09 to 24-7-09) Week 4 (From 27-7-09 to 31-7-09) In this week, I am doing testing on what we had done for this month. I am testing the part of sending inform email to users. I testing the system is it will send a correct email to the user after doing some action; accept any case, any status changes or etc in the system. I using my email to do this testing, so it is easy for me to refer to what had I done in the system. They give me some condition to test, after accept any case or information in the module, it will be send a information email to my hotmail, so I can check is it the correct email that we need. I have to check is it the information of the email that send to my mail is accurate when refer to the task that I had did in the module of the system. Turkmenistan: A Nation of Contradictions In October 2001, the Central Asian country Turkmenistan celebrated its tenth year of independence. Formerly the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (T.S.S.R), Turkmenistan gained its sovereignty with the collapse of its communist counterpart, the Soviet Union in 1991. However, there is much to be questioned about the status of the â€Å"democratic† republic which operates Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan functions as a government who has elected a lifelong dictator, supported the Taliban regime of Afghanistan, and allows no political opposition in any â€Å"democratic† function. Turkmenistan borders the Caspian Sea and the nations of Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. The land is mostly desert, giving little agricultural support to the Turkmen economy. Turkmenistan’s main industries include oil, petroleum, cotton, and textiles, all of which they export. More than 85 percent of the working population, however, works in agriculture. Most other resources are imported from surrounding countries, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States. A current goal of Turkmenistan to generate more revenues is to build a transnational pipeline transport infrastructure to pump gas and oil through to Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan. Exporting gas and oil from Turkmenistan has given the nation an economic advantage over its former Soviet counterparts, making Turkmenistan the nation who rose the fastest to its feet after gaining its independence. Or so Turkmenistan says. Economic analysts outside the former republics of the Soviet Union tend to disqu alify these claims based on the methods the Turkmen government has used to declare itself financially stable. My Life is History :: Personal Narrative Writing

My Life is History Light reflected off his menacing scales. Sixty-five million years before grocery stores, and drive through ATMs, Tyrannosaurus Rex stomped the fields of Palmer Massachusetts. In the pale light of a brisk October night, the resurrected teeth and textured body of the ferocious beast again terrorized Palmer safely restrained by the possessive clutch of my chubby little fingers. It was not so much that the I loved dinosaurs, though I did and still do, more I was intrigued that there was more than just my lifetime in the history of the world. Though I knew the world through the narrow scope of ten years, the earth had been around for millions. From that small age I was seduced by the past. What or who stomped the earth before me was an all consuming question for me. I wanted to know about those who lived before me. I wanted to know what kinds of lives they lead, what they did and who they were. History was my life. In the metropolis of Palmer there are few stoplights and even fewer attractions to stop at. On my unfrequented street in a little farmhouse on seventy-six acres we got few stations. Public television beamed to me quenched my insatiable need for history. While my counterparts were absorbed with the, then novel, music video I was reaching back to play with the Egyptians as they built the pyramids. Most every night I could bask in the cathode rays of emperors and kings, peasants, popes, and even the occasional murderer. Sometimes at night, I would go outside after a particularly interesting show and stare at the sky. In the heavens I saw the same sky as Napoleon Bonapart. I could see the stars Socrates saw out the window of his cell the night before he was executed. I reclined on grass watered by the sweat Joan of Arc perspired as she was burned at the steak on May 30, 1431 in a Rouen marketplace at the age of nineteen. Though these thoughts may have been macabre for a young child, they gave me an intense connection with the past. They created in me the desire to know everyone who came before me because as their history was part of me. The strong connection with the past brought me to one realization a little too early. I realized at a young age that I was mortal and all the implications there of.

All these are provided to us because we are living in a well-developed country. Others in the third world nation are not so lucky. They may have no shelter, limited food supply, and unemployed. This is because their country is not well developed like ours. Problems that stop these countries from developing are 1. The gross national product (GNP) is the most commonly used measure of the overall level of economic activity. The gross domestic product (GDP) measures the total value for final use of output produced by an economy, by both residents and nonresidents. Thus GNP comprises GDP plus the differences between the income residents receive from abroad for factor services (labor and capital) fewer payments made to nonresidents who contribute to the domestic economy. Many Third World countries have a low level of per capital income, in addition there is a slower GNP growth compare to the developed nations. Secondly, many people in third world countries are unhealthy and constantly battle with disease while trying to stay alive. The infant mortality rate is very high compared to the developed countries. One reason that leads to this is that they do not have the access to safe drinking water and health service. Clean drinking water is one of the major factors necessary to avoid illness. Water-borne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, and a wide array of serious or fatal diarrheal diseases are responsible for more than 35% of the deaths of young children Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Most of these diseases and resulting deaths can be eliminated with safe water supplies. In addition, health service is very limited in the least developed countries. It is limited in the number of doctors and beds provided for the patients. Also, all the hospitals and medical facilities are located in the urban areas. Memoirs of a geisha by arthur golden

The geishas of Japan have long held a mystery that has inspired a lot of stories about who they were and how they lived their lives. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden captures this fascinating and mysterious world in a story that contrasts the rich tradition of the geishas and the changes brought about by the World War II in Kyoto. This is the story of Chiyo, with her sister Saysu who are both sold to a stranger by their own father because they have to earn a living due to extreme poverty of their family.At the young age of nine, Chiyo has a beauty that makes her right to be a part of the geisha homes. However, her sister. Saysu, is not fortunate enough, as she does not possess beauty like her sister. Saysu is then forced into prostitution and the sisters are separated by these circumstances. Chiyo however metamorphoses into a beauty and is later known as Sayuri. Because she is the fairest among all the geisha’s in their home, she   eventually earns the wrath of the other geishas who came before her including the equally lovely Hatsumomo. Sayuri is almost destroyed by her rival Hatsumomo who envies her incessantly. If it were not for the intervention of the celebrated geisha Mameha, who coaches Sayuri about the chores and duties of a geisha, it would have been Sayuri’s end. Yet destiny prevails and Sayuri turns out to be a good pupil who learns to love what she has been taught.Author Arthur Golden succeeds in portraying the inner life of a geisha as he weaves the story in an enticing and engrossing way such that viewers find that their intricate kimonos are really not that easy to get into. Equally intricate is the way the story develops with the life of Sayuri as its focus. Golden recreates the scenes with such subtlety, sensuality and mastery of what the geisha world is all about. These glory days of Kyoto's Gion pleasure district is recaptured well in the story.The beauty and historical value of pre-war Japan is also seen here and which ad ds drama and color to the already colorful life of geishas. The book reminds me of the developmental theories which we learned in class. For instance, Bandura’s cognitive emphasis comes to mind as I view the scenes where Sayuri learns the art of being a gracious hostess. She is able to do it because she observed Hatsumomo many times over flipping the fans, turning and bowing to the clients with such excellent perfection. She is able to execute the movements excellently because of the observational learning which comes from observing the behavior of other people. Observational learning cannot occur unless cognitive processes are at work.In the story, the character Chiyo, who later transforms into Sayuri, was a keen observer all along. From the way the people nodded, she knew that there were some people who were plotting evil against her. She observed everything, even her benefactor, who transforms her life and whose actions does not escape the glances that were meant not only to look at the surface level, but to really look and find the nuances which she may uses.This art of observing has been perfected well by Sayuri and this is what removes her from the bind of the tradition and ennui. Observational learning is stressed in this cognitive social learning because this active, cognitive form of learning also permits individuals to be able to quickly assimilate thousands of new responses in a variety of settings. This is where their models are simply pursuing their own interests and are not trying to teach them anything. In the story, Sayuri continually learns both desirable and undesirable responses by keeping her eyes open. Moreover, in the story, we find that human development proceeds so very rapidly along so many different paths.I am also able to correlate the learning insights that there is a broad world view of how one should situate the context of the story. Another broad world view, the contextual model has recently emerged as the perspective that many developmentalists favor (Lerner, 1996). The contextual model views development as the product of a dynamic interplay between person and environment.People are assumed to be active in the developmental process (as in the organismic model) and the environment is active as well (as in the mechanistic model). Development may have both universal aspects and aspects peculiar to certain cultures, times or individuals. The potential exists for both qualitative and quantitative change, and development may proceed along many different paths depending on the intricate interplay between internal forces (nature) and external forces (environment).Since the story dates back to the height of the geishas and the rich culture of Japan, I am reminded again of the cross-cultural comparisons which one can apply as one reads the story. For instance, the story has given me a broad understanding of several Japanese students in the school. Some of them have been acquaintances and I now understand the particular culture that they come from. This provided me with some new ideas on the factors that may impact on the developmental process. It has given me new insights on the link between culture and development.Developmentalists are often hesitant  Ã‚   to publish a new findings or conclusions until they have finally observed and studied quite a number of people so that they can conclude that their results are reliable. However, their conclusions are more often based on participants living at one point in time within one particular culture or subculture. It would then be difficult to know if these conclusions apply to future generations or even to the young people currently growing up in other societies or subcultures (Lerner, 1996).Today, the generalizability of findings across samples and settings has become an important issue, for many theorists have implied that there are â€Å"universals† in human development—events and outcomes that all children share as they p rogress from infancy to adulthood. Thus, the cross-cultural guards against the overgeneralization of research findings.In sum, one must become a knowledgeable reader in order to get the most of what the field of human development has to offer, so that one’s views of the world from books, stories and one’s experiences become integrated in a coherent whole that explains why and how one acts and behaves the way he does. The story could have ended with the characters dismissing it as one of those geisha stories, but author Arthur Golden ends with bravura because the story recaptures the glorious days of the geisha and the values that provide the redeeming factor in an engrossing story of traditional Japan.It is interesting to note that Sayuri is able to blend well to the new environment where she is thrusted into because of her innate flexibility and strength of character from where she gets the power to rejuvenate. She is able to observe that she must obey and observe wha t her associates do, so that she can relate them in her own world as a geisha. She does not resent anything because she is made to do this work, but she negotiates her way around and emerges triumphant in the end where she â€Å"feels as a bird must feel when it has flown across the ocean and comes upon a creature that knows its nest.† (Starr).REFERENCESLerner, R.M. INTRODUCTION   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Today, we always hear news about crimes being committed by many people. Moreover, those people who commit crimes tend to offend again their previous criminal acts.   The repeating of doing such criminal act is known as recidivism. Specifically, recidivism is the term used when someone, who after receiving a punishment or negative consequences of the criminal behavior, repeat his or her criminal behavior. Due to the alarming increase in recidivism cases, policy makers in a given country try to find out what will be the best option or solution that will help in decreasing the number of criminal cases and one of their options is the implementation of punishment or what they call deterrence and the other method is rehabilitation. Deterrence had been a hot issue regarding on its ethical background and most especially its effectiveness in counterattacking recidivism. Many said that it is not effective in its sole purpose. They added that there are other ways to prevent an individual in committing crime again other than forcing those individual to be punished by law. But there were studies that concluded deterrence to be an effective tool in decreasing crime rate among crime violators whether the deterrence is specific or general. The most popular form of deterrence is imprisonment. Imprisonment brings fright to those possible committers. And this limits them to do crime again because deterrence brings bad experience to those who were found to have committed crime. OBJECTIVE The main audiences of this paper are the policy makers that are concerned on recidivism issues. Lawmakers will make certain policy that will guide these offenders and will treat them offenders. The said audience is not limited only to policy makers but also to those people like parole and rehabilitation officers who assess and guides these criminal committers in their probation program. This paper will try to analyze recidivism occurrence. This paper will have a deep analysis on the reasons why people tend to commit again their previous criminal behavior given that they were already given the right treatment and appropriate consequences to extinguish that behavior. The paper will not only tackle recidivism but also take a look on the current situation on the policies and actions given to those people who commit criminal acts again. Potential intervention to reduce the risk of recidivism will be one of the focuses of this paper. The effectiveness of the current actions will be emphasized as it will serve as a guide to the people who handle this kind of issue. The paper will compare deterrence and rehabilitation as the two most popular solutions and actions when dealing with recidivism. Is longer deterrence and rehabilitation will lead to minimize recidivism or will just increase the repeating of undesirable behavior after they have either experienced negative consequences of that behavior, or have been treated or trained to extinguish that behavior? The paper will try to answer all these questions to enlighten and give knowledge to the proposed reader of this paper. III. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Recidivism and Deterrence In legal terms, deterrence and recidivism are two common terms used. These two terms have many meaning and it depends on the field that the two terms were utilized. Recidivism is the act of returning to the offense that was previously committed. It is the repetition or habitual committing on crimes. The word originated from the Latin word recidÄ «vus which means recurring. The said term is usually used in criminology. An example of recidivism case is when a sexual offender person who after release from prison does again sexual harassment. Recidivism does not only include sexual harassment but also other form of criminal acts. Recidivism rate has been a major problem of different countries and solution to the increasing rate on recidivism is being done (Maltz, 2007). Recidivism Theories After discussing recidivism, the next topic to talk about is the theories behind recidivism. The theories that will explain the occurrence of recidivism are: Anomie, Differential Association Theory, Deviance theory, Labeling theory, Rational Choice theory, Social Control theory, Strain theory, Subcultural theory and Symbolic Interactionism (Clarke & Felson, 1993). Anomie pertains to the condition malaise or depression of an individual. Depression is the result of minimal guidance set by the governing and ruling body of a country. It is the lack of rules and regulation, standards and values that hinder criminal behavior. When the term anomie is applied in a government, it means social unrest or turmoil. The term anomie is synonymous on normlessness. It means that a person in a society will react against from the social norms which are guided by the set of rules and standards of a given society. Anomie focuses on the social issues rather than on the individual reason why there are such incidences of recidivism. This theory emphasize that the society has big responsibility in molding and guiding every citizen in the right path. On the other hand, Differential Association theory is almost synonymous to anomie. The said theory was developed by Edwin Sutherland. According to Sutherland, differential association can be seen when a person is being affected by the people around him. That person learns the values of the values, attitudes and behavior of the people around him to do criminal behavior. Thus the society around an individual has big impact on the possible recidivism (Clarke & Felson, 1993). Deviant behavior is also a possible answer why people tend to engage in repeating criminal acts. When a person displays deviant behavior, he is more likely to commit crimes. He does not know nor follow rules in a given society (Clarke & Felson, 1993). Labeling theory is another aspect to look in understanding recidivism. In this theory, the person’s deviant behavior is being affected by the people around him because these people try to categorize or label him as a person with abnormal behavior. The society dictates and classifies a person which can include the deviant behavior (Clarke & Felson, 1993). Looking on the psychological aspect of a person with recidivism case, he or she may have some problem that cannot be resolved easily. Thus, his brain may not function well. That person will try to commit undesirable acts like crime. This is the main point of rational choice theory, in which the person weighs means and ends and makes rational decisions (Clarke & Felson, 1993). Another theory that has relation to deviant behavior is the Social Control theory. The theory hypothesizes that deviant behavior if a person is a result of the dissatisfaction in a society. The person will break laws as a sign of grief. On the other hand, the Subcultural theory states that within a society, there is a group of person that has natural deviant behavior. If these people meet together, then they will find comfort with each other because they have the same feeling when doing deviant acts (Clarke & Felson, 1993). And the last theory will be the Strain theory. In criminology, the strain theory states that social structures within society may encourage citizens to commit crime. When the structure of the society inhibits the needs of a person, there is a big possibility that this person will commit unnecessary behavior like crimes (Clarke & Felson, 1993).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   For the past few years, the recidivism rate in the United States had a significant increase. Given the figure below, we can see that between 3 years, the number of recidivism in the country in 1994 within the 15 states had increased to 70% which is higher than the year 1983 which had a record of 60%.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   According to the Office of Justice Program, OPJ of the United Stares, 67.5% of prisoners released in 1994 were rearrested within 3 years, an increase over the 62.5% found for those released in 1983. The figure also shows that, all the crime categories had a relevant increase from 1983 to 1994. The property offenders, drug offenders and public-order offenders had increased from 68.1% to 73.8%, 50.4% to 66.7% and 54.6% to 62.2% respectively.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Moreover, OPJ emphasized that in the year 1994, recidivism rate within 3 years was estimated to be 51.8% of prisoners released during the year were back in prison for the reason of a committing fresh crime for which they received another prison sentence, or because they were not able to follow the regulations of their parole. Recidivism rate in 1983 and 1994 Deterrence   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   For this paper, two topics regarding on the correctional methods will be focused and these are deterrence and parole and probation. These two methods differ with each other in terms of the process and principle being employed. The former believes that correctional means can be attained and achieved when punishment or negative consequence is applied in the crime committer while the former consider the rehabilitation and education of prisoners. Another term which has relation on recidivism is deterrence. Deterrence is the act of providing necessary punishment on those who commit crime. The degree of the punishment depends also on the degree of the crime that was committed (Maltz, 2007). There are two forms of deterrence, the specific and the general. The former describes deterrence as punishment given only to the individual who committed the crime while the latter describe deterrence as punishment on the general audience. Specific deterrence is also known as individual deterrence. The general deterrence focuses on general prevention of crime by making examples of specific deviants. The individual actor is not the focus of the attempt at behavioral change, but rather receives punishment in public view in order to deter other individuals from deviance in the future. Deterrence as a major tool in lessening recidivism rate gained many criticisms about its effectiveness. Many said that deterrence, whether it is specific or general, is not effective in decreasing the crime rate in the country. Some studies regarding on the effectiveness of deterrence found that violators are not afraid on the punishment, but rather they are more afraid on the act of caught. Usually, the offenders are the drug and alcohol abusers. This result was supported on the findings on areas where surveillance cameras were introduced. Possible violators were afraid to be caught from the surveillance cameras thus lowering the rate of crime cases. General deterrence has also been heavily criticized for relying on publicity of heavy punishments; it has been described as â€Å"the least effective and least fair principle of sentencing†. Other countries like the Great Britain believe on rehabilitation procedure rather than deterrence. Deterrence Theory But why deterrence is still being implemented in many criminal procedures? To answer this question, it is better to examine the principle behind the use of punishment to eradicate crimes. In behavioral psychology, deterrence is theory on introducing punishment for those who violated the law. Today, United States is adopting and implementing this practice in their criminal justice procedure. The principle behind the use of an iron hand for those who committed crime is that, the violator will be afraid when introduced to punishment and will refrain from doing it again. Deterrence: Effective or not? This paper will try to analyze the effectiveness if deterrence in minimizing the crime rate or the recidivism among countries. Also, the two types of deterrence, specific and general will be examined. There were many studies were conducted to address the problem in the rise of recidivism. Part of the studies was the implementation of punishment among the violators. The studies analyze procedure on the implementation as well the effectiveness of the said procedures. According to the study that was made by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, punishment among violators on individuals who are apprehended for driving under the alcohol influence (DUI), driving while intoxicated (DWI), or related offenses such as driving after suspension for a DUI and violation of zero tolerance laws found that giving them a sanction is effective in doing the said crimes again. As a matter of fact, many policy makers use punishment to control the rise of crimes on their countries. They developed laws that will hinder in doing offense or any unlawful act. People are afraid on the punishment like going to jail. The principle behind the use of any kind of punishment is the inculcation or realization of the bad experiences from punishment (Henry, 2003). Specific deterrence has a positive effect on the decrease in the rate of crime cases. An individual will think again if he or she will do the crime again after the individual had a bad experience of the punishment he or she received earlier. This will make the potential offender afraid on the possible sanction he may incur and will also produce doubt in doing the crime again (Martin & Ellis, 1998). General deterrence also produce a positive effect in relation to the lessening the crime rate in a given place. People will have an idea on the proposed sentence or penalty. The most popular example of general deterrence is going to jail. The media will broadcast the bad condition of a person in a jail. According to studies, jail imprisonment is more effective as a general deterrent, but it appears to be no more effective as a specific deterrent for reducing DUI recidivism than other sanctions, and it is far more costly (Martin & Ellis, 1998). Another form of deterrence is the administrative license suspension or any other criminal records that will be a problem is any job employment. When a person committed a crime, he or she will have criminal record and when this person will apply for a job, the company he or she is applying will need a criminal clearance, if in United States, an FBI clearance. When the person applying for the job had a criminal record, the company will hesitate to employ the said individual. This form of deterrence had created an impact in the reduction of recidivism (Martin & Ellis, 1998). To strengthen the argument on the effectiveness of deterrence when it comes to the elimination of recidivism, another study was conducted to determine the effect of the length of imprisonment to the number of law violations.   According to Weinrath and Gartrell (2001), they concluded that sentence length exerted consistent deterrent effects on repeat drunk driving, even for chronic offenders. While in a shorter jail imprisonment, the offenders that will be imprisoned at shorter time were more likely to repeat their habitual crime commitment. This finding will strengthen the evidence on the argument that deterrence is an effective tool in lessening the crime rate in a given place ( Weinrath and Gartrell, 2001). Moreover, longer deterrence has positive impact in lessening recidivism rate. Another classification of deterrence is the severity and strictness. According to Henry (2003), mild punishment tends to have positive effects on decreasing recidivism while those severe consequences produce negative effects. Psychological research on punishment in has shown that mild punishment can be effective in changing behavior and is dependent on the frequency, immediacy application and with positive reinforcement of pro-social behavior. On the other hand, severe punishment will only lead to avoidance or escape, alienation of those punished, and aggressiveness. Parole and Rehabilitation   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There are many possible causes why recidivism is present in our society. One is the problem in their family. When the parents of the family are not around in their home or a broken family, these are possible factors. The most prone to commit recidivism that is results on the minimal parental guidance are the youth or juvenile. The juveniles are not being monitored on their activities. This kind of family structure is not good for a child because juveniles has a low self control especially when encountering serious problem like family problems, they tend to break and to escape to the problem, they break the laws and norms of the society. In this period, they are engage in drinking alcohol and drug abusing. There will come a time when they will repeat the crime they had committed before.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Problems in their schooling are other factors that contribute to the increase in juvenile recidivism cases. If a child experience failing grades or does not do well in class, the child will find a way to escape on their problems and this may lead to juvenile delinquency activities.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another major cause of recidivism among is the social factor. This can be explained when a person experienced racial discrimination, sexual harassment, abandonment, physical abuse and neglect. The society may dictate what an innocent person can do. If a person is surrounded by criminal incidences, that person may be influenced by these wrong doings. This is somewhat related to peer to peer relation. If group of people has engaged in wrong doing like alcohol drinking, drug abusing, the innocent person may be influenced. (Roberts, 2000)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Because of the alarming news and impact of recidivism in the society, the government of United States made a program to lessen the impacts and cases of reoffending of criminal acts in the society. Lawmakers made a response to these issues. They made laws and policies that will eliminate recidivism cases in the society. Children who commits the case were been rehabilitate in a rehabilitation center to put in to realization the crime they had committed and how to escape from the disorder of their behaviors.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Parole and probation are both part of the rehabilitation program made by lawmakers. Dressler (1959) defined parole as the release of the delinquent outside the rehabilitation center under supervision of a parole officer. The offender had undergone rehabilitation in a correctional center. The word parole was in the French language is defined as promise and in dictionary context it is word of honor. The release is conditional and the behavior of the delinquent is being monitored. While probation is the release of the delinquent to the community in which he can rehabilitate his behavior better. Like parole, the offender’s behavior is being monitored by the probation officer. The word probation comes from the Latin language meaning a period of supervision and guidance. Probation in church term means the period were a person is seeking in the entrance to the church.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In a rehabilitation center, probation is a treatment where the offender will have the chance to have socialized in a community. Probation and parole programs are being handled by the court members.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The delinquent under parole program had stayed in the rehabilitation center. Both parole and probation programs are made to change the behavioral problems of the offenders. They believe that rehabilitation can be made better to the offenders if they stay in a community than staying in prison. In the parole program, offenders are given the second chance to change their behaviors, as well in the probation program. The offenders tend to learn their lesson after they undergone in this two programs.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Torbet (1996) said that probation or parole program on recidivism cases has been overwhelming dispositional decision of court judges. Almost half of the recidivism cases were made to probation or parole program. Torbet said also that probation is the roughest sanction that the offender can received. At the end of 80’s decade, Whitehead and Lab (1989) made a meta analysis on the effects of probation or parole treatment on the behavior of the juvenile delinquent and concluded that probation programs lessen the recidivism of the offender.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1992, Lipsey released another meta analysis study regarding on probation or parole programs. The result also showed that recidivism was lessening on juvenile delinquent when probation is granted to them than those in comparison group. In 1998, Lipsey together with Wilson conducted another Meta analysis study on the effects of serious juvenile delinquent cases to probation program. The result also showed that probation lessens the cases in recidivism. The results also suggest that there are many variations on how the probation program is being worked.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Some studies had been conducted to determine the effects of the duration of probation programs to recidivism. Wooldredge in 1998 found that the longer the time of probation the greater are the incidence of recidivism. Longer duration made the offenders to have impatience and disrespect on the probation officers. Wooldredge concluded that two years of supervision is the ideal duration for a probation program.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another study was conducted by Sontheimer and Goodstein (1993) to find out how intensive probation aftercare programs lessen the occurrence of offending using random assignment. And the result showed that it does not lessen the occurrence that the offender will commit again juvenile crime. Parole and Probation; Effective or not?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Effective response on recidivism cases is a key to minimize the occurrence of the said cases.   Effective intervention on the possible causes of recidivism cases and the proper management to the offenders is the first step in reducing the reoffending of crime cases.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Studies show that effective intervention reduce the recidivism rate.
