He develops a love for a woman named Cosette. Marius does not know this girl, but he thinks he is in love with her. This is caused by his many loveless years of neglect. After Marius sees Cosette for the first time in six months, she appears to have â€Å"put on a mantle of beauty† (291). This is showing how the neglect has finally made Marius snap and he finds he has to love someone. The desperation for love drove Marius to essentially love the first thing he saw, this being Cosette. Hugo also demonstrates the idea of this undying neglect through the character Eponine. Even though she belongs to a family, Eponine is one of the most neglected Thenardier children and often resorts to desperation to find someone to care for her. The lack of love from her family essentially causes Eponine to age at an exponential rate. Since she has no family to love her Eponine has become very promiscuous and sleeps around a lot. Mr. Thenardier, her father, is the most neglectful member of the family. He has not one ounce of care for his family, all he cares about is conning other people out of their hard earned money. He uses his daughter Eponine as one way of doing this. Eponine is â€Å"sold† by her father to have sex with men so he can gain money. She used to be a beautiful girl, but because of this neglect â€Å"the grace of her youth was†¦ struggling against the hideous old age brought on by debauchery and poverty† (286). Hugo is showing how living a short life of neglect can make someone seem like they are much older. Eponine’s beauty was annihilated as a result of neglect. The word debauchery is used to demonstrate how this neglect has caused her to become a desperate woman, who is looking for different things to make her feel better about herself. Even Marius, who has been living in solitude and neglect for years realizes that â€Å"he had never known real misery. Real misery he had just seen† in Eponine (290). This is showing how Eponine has taken the worst effects of the neglect she has experienced. Eponine is the most unfortunate person Marius has seen, and he lived on the streets for five years. Eponine’s desperation only rises when she meets Marius, however. She immediately develops an infatuation for him. She views him as â€Å"a very pretty boy† and even though Marius â€Å"pays no attention† to her, â€Å"[she] know[s] [him], Monsieur Marius† (288). Hugo is now showing is that Eponine’s desperation has led her to start stalking Marius. The neglect Eponine has faced forces her to do things she might not have normally done. Such acts deem her as crazy to people such as Marius. Her small infatuation eventually turns to an undying love and obsession for Marius. She ends up wanting Marius so bad, she takes a bullet for him. The everlasting problem of neglect exists not only in the novel, but also happens to many children even today. All throughout society today, many children are neglected by their parents and are subject to near death experiences. A young girl from the town of Carnation was found starved to a mere 48 pounds at the age of 14. Her family neglected her for years by locking her into her room and denying her access to food and water. Over the course of the many years of neglect, the young girl was faced with the ultimate struggle, the struggle for life. She was forced to â€Å"survive on toast and a half a Dixie cup of water a day† (Carter). The amount of food and water she was given is not enough to live off of, which is why her desperation to live has kicked in. The lack of family allegiance in her life caused her natural instinct to live to kick in. At times when it seemed like she needed water to live, â€Å"she would sometimes suck condensation from the windows or sneak a drink from the toilet† (Carter). These are things that would not normally be done by any human being. The neglect this girl was facing caused her to resort to nearly ecoming an animal to live. This relates back to Les Mis when Marius was living on the streets. Marius had many challenges to overcome just like the girl. The problem today is much more extreme today than portrayed in the novel. Today the children that face neglect are locked up and deprived of any help whatsoever, but in Les Mis the people who faced neglect could reach out to any people they could to get help. The effects on the children of today’s life are much worse than that of Les Mis. As stated in the article, at the age of 14 she â€Å"was 4 foot 7 and weighed 48 pounds† (Carter). This is showing how in today’s society the children who face neglect are nearly killed as a result. The problem of neglect is a serious and troubling one, but that does not mean there are no solutions for it. The neglect Marius faces in his life seems to lead him down an unbearable path of loneliness and depression, however, things start to look better once he meets the woman of his dreams, Cosette. One day while Marius is feeling sad, and alone, he sees a beautiful woman named Cosette. He immediately falls in love with her and wants to meet her, however he doesn’t know where or how to start. He notices she is always with an older man who appears to be her father. The solution for Marius to be a happy man and to work through the neglect is Cosette. When Marius saw her beauty, he instantly became obsessed. It has been some time since Marius first saw her, and now he sees that â€Å"she had not only grown, she had become idealized† (291). Hugo is telling us how Marius has become obsessed, and that she is his idea of perfection, thus showing that Cosette is the solution for Marius’ life of neglect. After Marius gets to know Cosette, he starts putting all his time and thought into her. He would not make a decision without thinking of Cosette first. Even though Marius is no longer feeling the effects of neglect, he starts to face the consequences of obsession. It gets to the point where when Cosette needs to move away to another country, Marius feels his life is over, and goes to get himself killed at the barricade. This is all a result of the neglect Marius faced growing up. Even though the solution was to find love, this love drove Marius psychotic and made him want to end his life. Similarly, Eponine’s solution did not end well. Eponine’s constant neglect and cumbersome life seem to cause her to age apidly and make her a weak person, until things start to lighten up when she meets Marius. Marius is to Eponine, as Cosette is to Marius. He is the one thing that can possibly make Eponine’s life better, but he hardly knows she exists. Eponine develops the loving feeling that she never felt with her family, for Marius. In doing this, she is filling the gap in her live that has been vacant for so long. Even the slightest thing that Marius does is shown to bring happiness and joy into her live. When Marius â€Å"gave†¦five francs to the young girl†, she is ecstatic and exclaims that â€Å"there is some sunshine† (289). Even though Marius only gave her a small amount of money, the fact that she had any correlation with Marius whatsoever gave her hope. Although, much like Marius’ love with Cosette, Eponine gets too caught up. There comes a point at the barricade for the rebel forces where Marius is in danger, and Eponine puts her life in danger just to save him. Marius is about to be shot, but Eponine steps in and puts her hand out. The man shoots the bullet through her hand, and Eponine takes the bullet to the chest. As Eponine was cured of her life of neglect, she started focusing too much onto Marius, which resulted in her death. In both instances of the novel, the solution ended up leading to a much worse fate. Although some may argue that death is a better fate than the life of suffering they would have had to live if there was no one for them to love. Throughout the novel, Hugo illustrates the solutions for neglect as love in one person. However, in today’s society, the solution is shown to be love from a family and all the necessities of life. The little girl from Carnation, Washington was forced to literally suck water out of windows to live, until the police found out and put her into a hospital and eventually a foster home. With the help of the hospital and the foster home, the girl’s life was ultimately saved. Even though she was put into a better place, things were not all happy and free yet. She still had many complications from the years of suffering she was put through. But with the help of her foster family, she has managed to â€Å"[gain] 20 pounds, [attend] private school, and [make] friends† (Carter). The young girl’s success has been illustrated through the idea that a neglectful life can be turned around if you give enough love to that person. The progress made after the girl was presented with a little bit of love is immaculate, and if the characters in Les Miserables had taken the same approach, they would have ended up happy and not dead. From the beginning it has been shown that neglect can lead to a very tragic and dreadful life, but the ability to stay with and persevere through it can cause anyone to be happy. When Marius is presented with Cosette he forgets about all the bad things in his life and thinks he has it better. The same happens with Eponine, but she falls for Marius. When this happens, she quickly gets back on her feet, gaining back the necessary weight to live. She makes friends as well which turn her neglectful life back to normal. The book Breath Eyes Memory by Edwidge Danticat is about the journey of a woman as she faces the many hardships due to her mother and the culture that exists around them. The book deals with the relationship between the mother and the daughter and how both of their stories are intricately intertwined, as much as any of them wants the forces acting upon their relationship were created long before them and cannot be changed easily. This story is about how Sophie Caco comes to terms with life and how she faces everything that she has to face and how it changes her. One of the things which looms over Sophie and loomed over her mother is the ritual of testing. In this ritual the girls virginity is checked by administering a test. This test is a very painful process, much more painful emotionally than it could be physically. One thing that this test reinforces when it is administered on Sophie is that her mother does not trust her. It also puts a lot of pressure on her because it becomes something she has to constantly worry and think about. One can even say that the test does the opposite of what it is supposed to be doing. Instead of letting Sophie mature like a normal girl it forces her to constantly think about her virginity and about how she is being oppressed and mistreated in her own home by her own mother. One of the most telling things that comes at a pivotal point in the book is when she asks her mother why she administered the test to her when she herself had been harassed so much. This is a very important point which many people will miss unless they know how life is in countries with tradition heavy cultures. Most people think that men of these countries are the ones who prosecute the women for being free and keep them chained to tradition. The sad truth is that women of these cultures have as much of a part as any man. The reason is simple; they have been so brainwashed by tradition and culture and what happened to them when they were little girls that none of them stop to think about what they are doing and what consequences it might have for the little girl. Sophias mother says she will answer her if Sophia promises to never ask again. This is the answer she gets, I did it, she said, because my mother had done it to me. I have no greater excuse. I realize standing here that the two greatest pains of my life are very much related. The one good thing about my being raped was that it made theÂÂ  testingÂÂ  stop. The testing and the rape. I live both every day (Danticat, 1998). This quote is very important because it reveals many things about the story. It tells us about how her mother thought it was abusive too yet because she had to go through it she was doing it to her daughter too. Many things can be said about this, maybe it was revenge, maybe a form of jealousy (if I had to go through it, why not her?) or something else. But the sword of tradition hangs over the head of these people. It also tells us about how she feels about the two greatest pains of her life, the testing and the rape and how she equates the two pains. While the testing may not have been as bad as rape it was still a horrible part of her life and as much as she hates being raped a part of her was relieved that she would not have to go through the pain of testing again. The rape was the point where it all stopped mattering; where no one would be suspicious of her and make her get tested again. She was finally free of the test. She also talks about how she has never outgrown the testin g or the rape (She lives them every day). It means she carries the pain with her; not only the pain but the influence too. They way she lives her life, the woman that she became all had something to do with the testing and the rape. These horrible things are not something she can forget and she cannot claim that they did not have part in making her who she is today. The testing manifests itself in another main point of the book where Sophie, finally realizing she cannot take any more of it decides to do something about it. She is tired of being tested and asked all the time. In a fit of emotion she takes her mothers spice pestle and deflowers herself with it. As painful as the process is it is still better than being tested again and again. As she feels her maidenhood being broken she feels pain but she also feels free, thinking the act of breaking her hymen as breaking manacles, an act of freedom (Danticat). She knows it is the only thing she can do and she does it. While her mothers testing stopped because she was raped Sophie would not wait for something bad to happen to her. She took control into her own hand and broke her own hymen. This is also important because it tells us about the vast difference between Sophie and her mother. While her mother has resigned herself to fate and lives with whatever happened to her, Sophie has a much more active outlook towards her life. She wants to break free of the manacles of tradition and just make her own destiny. She will not inflict pain upon her daughter; she will not be like her mother. She is the one who breaks the cycle of tradition. This was a very emotional book and a very telling one too. While it was enlightening for us I wish that this was read more by women who have to go through this. The little girls who still face this kind of treatment need to understand that they can break the cycle too if they want and make sure that this debauchery ends with their generation. I felt the book was very personal and raw and the story of Sophie going from innocence to freedom is an amazing journey that people should understand. This is a great book because not only do we understand the culture and the people within the book but we also understand the culture and the people of real life. We often wonder how people in some cultures can be so backwards and books like this help us understand, give us the answer. Only if we understand the reasons can we fix the problems. Our children’s lives are at risk and a plan on preventing these massacres needs to be reached. These songs give perspective on this issue and were inspired by a tragedy that we all feel effected by, directly or indirectly. The lyrics are moving and encourages rage, sadness and the reality that these occurrences happen way to often to our children in schools across the country. It is bold in the approach and gives a point of view that may differ from ou r own. If it does not make you feel sympathetic at the very least it creates awareness that this is a problem that is only growing by the year. Youth of a Nation† by P.O.D., abbreviated for Payable on Death referring to Jesus Christ dying on the cross for the sins of the world. The song came out in 2001 on the album Satellite. The very diverse group, P.O.D is a Christian metal band from San Diego but also air their music on secular radio stations. The song was nominated for a Grammy in 2003, many of their songs have a message for someone to relate to with a subtle hint of religious reference. This song gives three stories of adolescent tragedy in American culture. The music video shows four young people taking a road trip in an old car. There are yearbook pictures of all of the victims of the school shootings displayed where the band is playing for effect. Foster the People’s song â€Å"Pumped Up Kicks† was released in 2010 on the album Torches. They are an indie pop group and received a Grammy nomination for this song. Mark Foster, who wrote the song, wanted to bring awareness to the growing teenage mental illness issue. It is from the perspective of a troubled youth with homicidal thoughts. The bassist Cubbie Fink had a cousin who was a survivor of the Columbine High School massacre. It hit close to home and this was the platform to speak about this growing epidemic. The song was considered controversial and banned from being played on some radio stations. In the beginning of the music video it shows a kid talking to his friend and looking out from the cafeteria into the quad. There is a person in a bulletproof vest approaching and he notices he is shooting a gun. He gets down on the floor and pulls his friend down with him. When the gunshots are heard the other kids hit the floor, scream and run in panic and terror. Ki ds are being shot and the students in the cafeteria run for cover some try to escape out of an exit. The fear in these teenagers’ eyes as they hide under the tables is heart wrenching. Chaos ensures and everyone scrambles as the chorus line from the song plays, â€Å"better run, better run, faster than my bullet (Mark Foster).† With these tragedies happening so often in society it makes the listener think about those effected in the schools. There was Columbine 4/20/99, Santana High School 3/5/2001, and Granite Hills High School 3/22/2001 (Thompson 214). According to CNN, in 2018 there have been at least 80 incidents of gunfire on school grounds. The numbers have increased every year starting from 1997. Awareness is first priority so people can stand up and show our state and government that we want action and new laws created. That is why I can appreciate both songs and the artists who performed them. They are both powerful in their own way and disturbing at the same time. To open our eyes to the real issue at hand and who is at risk is the goal in which both bands succeed. People don’t always want to see the ugly truth but at some point, it will affect us all in some way. We need to find a solution before we are personally faced with the tragic ending of a loved one. If you have never heard either of these songs look them up and listen to the lyrics. P.O.D. has a basic idea being portrayed in the video that doesn’t speak to the tragedy being referenced. They may have been going for an interpretive video but it still seems undeveloped and uninteresting.
