Problems in Raising New Funds Case of Briarwood Medical Equipment Study
Essays on Problems in Raising New Funds: Case of Briarwood Medical Equipment Case Study The paper "Problems in Raising New Funds: Case of Briarwood Medical Equipment" is a perfect example of a case study on finance and accounting. Briarwood Medical Equipment (BME) needs to raise capital for a $250 thousand expansion to meet customer demand. BME is a small business entity. The company can face many problems in raising new funds because it is not listed in the stock market. Below are listed some ideas of what might be most suitable.SELLING EQUITY STOCKS: the company has the option of selling its equity shares through IPO. The company can easily raise new finance through this method. On the other hand, this method will result in the liquidation of control. BME is a family business and management wants to retain the control of the business in the family. But this is only the method that carries low risk. BME has recently launched the IPO of common stock in the market. This means that potential investors will carry voting rights and control with their investment.BANK LOANS: BME can also raise new finance to meet customer demand through bank loans. The company can request a bank loan of $250 thousand.à BME can also secure this loan on any of its business assets. On the other side of the coin, debt finance carries many risks with them. The bank can also impose some limitations on the company against the loan. As the BME is operating in the small business sector, then there is the possibility that the bank can demand a higher level of interest rates. à à à à à à à BUSINESS ANGELS AND VENTURE CAPITALISTS: BME can also consider the way of business angels and ventures capitalist to raise the finance of $25,000.CAPITAL ASSET PRICING MODEL:Capital asset pricing model shows how the minimum required return on a security depends on its risk (ACCA, 2010) The CAPM of the BME Company has been calculated belowCAPM = Rf + b (Rm-Rf)WhereRf = Risk-free return(Rm-Rf) = equity risk premium (sometimes referred to as average market risk premium)b = systemat ic risk of the investment compared to the market and therefore the amount of premium needed.Data for BME CompanyRf = 10% ;à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à (Rm-Rf) = 5%; à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à b = 1.25CAPM = 10 + 1.25 (5)CAPM = 16.25%à DISCOUNTED CASH FLOW:Discounted cash flow is a valuation method that is used to estimate the attractiveness of investment for potential investors. (Investopedia)DCF = Cf / ( 1 +r )1 +à Cf / ( 1 +r )2 WhereCf = cash flow;à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à r = Rate of returnData of BMECash flow 2012 = $260,000Cash flow 2013 = $270,000Rate of return = 16.25% (assumed from CAPM calculation)DCF = (260,000 / 1.1625) + (270,000 / 1.351)DCF = 423506RECOMMENDATIONSBME Company is seeking opportunities for raising new finance for $ 250,000 to meet with the customer demand. The management of the company is planning to raise new finance by issuing common stock. Common stock is another way of capital growth and capital returns (Investopedia). On the basis of CAPM calculation, BME has a return of 16.25% which is higher than the market rate. This means that the common new common stock will give a higher level of returns. The value of discounted cash flow seems good in relation to new investment. The revenue projections are also showing a constant increase in the revenue in the result of new investment in common stock.RECOMMENDATIONS TO BME:The idea of raising new finance by issuing new common stock is good, but the management needs to consider the division of control of current shareholders. Current shareholders will lose their control and voting rights because the common stockholders have more voting and control rights due to the nature of their investment. (ACCA, Financial Management, 2008).à à à à à à à à à à RECOMMENDATION FOR POTENTIAL INVESTORS:The investment in the BME Company can give good value to the money of potential investors. The company is performing well and it is expected that the new investment will generate a higher level of returns in future years. In addition, BME is paying a constant level of dividends to its shareholders. As the company is expected to grow its performance in future years so it is the possibility that the company will increase the level of dividends in the near future. Capital growth and wealth maximization is another main thing that a shareholder wants (ACCA, Financial Management, 2008). According to CAPM calculation and future projections, it is expected that the shareholderââ¬â¢s wealth will increase in the near future. In short, on the basis of given data potential investors can give good value to their money by investing in the BME company.

The ruined maid free essay sample
The topic of the ruined maid is a dialogue conversation between two women who have met on the off chance in town, one of which has been ruined. Throughout the poem the narrator praises the ruined maid on her appearance and how her life has seemed to improve since leaving the farm. Thomas hardy used the repetition of ââ¬Ëruined said sheââ¬â¢ at the end of each stanza to emphasise although the maids life has improved in so many ways she is now ruined. In the 1800s to be a prostitute was seriously frowned upon so although the ruined maidââ¬â¢s life has improved, there will always be a price to pay, this woman will never marry or have children and if she did they would be born fatherless, yet another thing frowned upon in the 1800s. The construction of the ruined maid is set out in six four line stanzas, with regular rhyme in each following an aabb pattern. We will write a custom essay sample on The ruined maid or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The idea runs the same throughout the poem in the first two lines the narrator always refers to the ruined maids past lastly complementing how nice she looks or how well she seems to be doing, in return the ruined maid always agrees while reminding her in the last words she is now ruined, damaged goods, except for in the last stanza the narrator finds herself wishing she too could have this life reminded by the ruined maid that she ââ¬Ëcanââ¬â¢t expect that sheââ¬â¢s not ruinedââ¬â¢. In each stanza uses imagery to reflect on past and present such as ââ¬Ëyou left us in tatters, without shoes or socksââ¬â¢ this can be seen as imagery for poverty in the 1800s, contrasted with the present ââ¬Ëand now youve gay bracelets and bright feathers three!ââ¬â¢ emphasising just how much her life has changed she can now have small luxuryââ¬â¢s and nice things, there is also the assonance of the a in gay bracelets Thomas Hardy uses alliteration throughout the first two lin es in each stanza when referring to the ruined maidââ¬â¢s past; ââ¬ËMelia my dear/thee and thou/blue and bleakââ¬â¢. There is also a punctuation mark in each stanza to emphasise just how much the maidââ¬â¢s life seems to have changed to the narrator in the quote ââ¬Ëbright feathers three!ââ¬â¢ the exclamation mark emphasises the dramatic change between past and present, going from no shoes or socks to bracelets and feathers in her hat a mere luxury for the women of this time. The attitudes of the narrator and the ruined maid totally opposite, the narrator is almost naive towards what the ruined maid is telling her. Itââ¬â¢sà as if she doesnââ¬â¢t understand what ruined means, she is just looking at the materialistic side of things. Whereas the ruined maid knows her life is easier now but she also has serious consequences to pay for the life she is living, as I said before life in the 1800s wasnââ¬â¢t easy but prostitution was the lowest of the low in the social structure. My opinion on the ruined maid is a sad feeling towards both the narrator and the ruined maid. The narrator because she is almost admiring what this woman has achieved, the poem also leaves us with a sense this naive girl is intrigued into following the maids footsteps. Who wouldnââ¬â¢t want his materialistic life in such hard times? I also pity the maid, through hardship she has had to make the decision to turn to prostitution, knowing the effect it will have on her later in life, she can never marry or have children because she is bottom of the list in the social structure, no man will ever look at her now or want to be with her.

America Of mice and men essays
America Of mice and men essays The American Dream now day's is living in a huge mansion on an island with all the luxurious things you could ask for. During the Depression the American Dream was to have a small house and be able to grow crops to be able to have your own business. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses George and Lennies version of the American Dream to represent the low standards of the Depression. George and Lennie fought hard to try and accomplish their dream. ` Someday-were gonna get the jack together and were gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an a cow and some pigs and live off the fatta the lan. ` They were always thinking of how they could get the land and the little house they always wanted. Steinbeck has George and Lennie always talk about their dream to make it to where the reader knows that, they have always wanted to fulfill this dream of theirs and that it could happen for them. There were many characters throughout the book who did not believe in George and Lennies dream. Many of them thought that they could never do it. The American Dream was set at a low standard during the Depression. Many people were jumping from job to job or just trying to find a job. ` There wouldnt be no more runnin around the country and getting fed by a Jap cook. `(57) The American Dream was set at such a low standard mostly because of the income that people were making, some peoples dreams were to just find a house and some land to be able to live off of while others dreams were to just get a job to be able to survive. ` They come an they quit an go on, an every damn one of ems got a little piece of land in his head. ` (74) Some people did survive and did make there dream come true but than there were some that didnt. ...

Border Security Technology Deployment Case Study
Border Security Technology Deployment - Case Study Example SBInet as a system represents a complex case of conflicts of interests whereby: 1. National Security concerns are marred by political interference. This is especially evident in the statement acquired from the contractor. Another case of political intrusion is mentioned by the Border Patrol Station Chief. He claims that some Washington based politicians had the towers installed approximately three hundred and thirty feet apart from the border so as to avoid ââ¬Å"sending the wrong message.â⬠Their new positions consequently minimised their capabilities. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Sector Chief and the Border Patrol Station Chief cite the Native American tribal councils as a major problem. According to Border Patrol Station Chief, there is a quick change of governance in the Native American tribal councils and every new leadership undermines all agreements that had been made by the previous leadership. To make matters worse Unmanned Arial Vehicles are not allowed to fly over their territories without permission. Neither can the border patrols cr oss without their permission. According to the CBP, Sector Chief Native American land is a preferred route for illegal immigrants due to its inaccessibility. The only way to deal with politics in this situation is to have a regulatory committee that tables the grievances of any trouble departments especially due to external interference. This is because some untouchables may have their way in jeopardising the SBInet operations due to their lack of professionalism in the particular field that is border security (CNN, 2012). It will be necessary to have the committee immune to manipulation or even intimidation so as to have a dependable body that is fair to all. 2. Conflicts between involved parties undermine border protection There are conflicts between the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE, whose responsibility is to monitor, investigate and to resolve illegal immigration deeds seems to be at loggerheads with CBP. CBP whose respon sibility is to patrol the border and to monitor illegal entry, apprehend and detain the illegal immigrants claims that ICE does not share information related to their common line of work. It is clear that the line of work between the two departments is very much related hence there is a need for co-operation especially from ICE. The ICE department claims that when the Department of Homeland Security was introduced the ICE, and CBP became one and blames the CBP for trying to take their assets. Meanwhile, CBP claims that ICE does not share their sensor data. According to the Border Patrol Station Chief it is difficult for the right hand to work without knowing what the left hand is doing. In as much as that makes perfect sense it is clear that the individual departments are supposed to be independent of each other. Hence it would be wiser to either have both departments combined into one with all their duties synchronised. Another option would be having their duties defined into clear , separate undertakings such that there will be no inter dependence between each other. This suggestion is mainly based on the reality that there may be policies within the individual departments that may make the ability to inter relate somehow constrained. The inter relations between the departments should also be put down on paper so that future conflicts be avoided and procedures of interactions be common knowledge. 3. Lack of accountability and responsibility hence blame games Blames games are commonplace in SBInet with no particular individual taking responsibility for any faults. For example, the Border Patrol

Mobile Computing And Social Network Research Paper
Mobile Computing And Social Network - Research Paper Example Currently, mobile computing technology has profound impact on health care management. Recently, a number of devices have been developed to work with an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad for the purpose of recording patientââ¬â¢s health information including blood pressure, blood glucose levels, oxygen levels, and heart rate. This paper will discuss the impacts of mobile computing technology in the field of health care management. Mobile computing technology Vs traditional practices It is evident that vital signs are central components of patient care and they mainly include body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, respiratory rate, and other measurements. Today, all these vital signs can be recorded and tracked using mobile computing technology. In the recent past, patients were required to consult a physician or go to a clinical laboratory to check for these vital signs. Under this practice, physicians or sometimes nurses record the patientââ¬â¢s vital sig ns manually and document the signs on a piece of paper or store them in a mobile computer. Once the testing process ended, it would take a fairly long time to record the documented data on electronic charts using computers. As clinical practitioners usually point out, it is very difficult to take vital signs in some cases due to multiple reasons (ââ¬ËVital signs and measurementsââ¬â¢). ... Currently, smart phones and broadband-enabled devices assist patients to monitor their own vital signs frequently and to upload the result to clinical servers of healthcare providers. According to, Fernandes, Afonso, and Simoes (n .d.), chances of errors are relatively less under this method. Using this technology, patients can easily make video conference calls and obtain instant health suggestions from medical providers. Experts suggest that this technology represents an effective approach to disease prevention and health care. Currently, hospitals also use mobile computing to provide patients with quality health care services. Advantages and disadvantages of using mobile computing technology The advantages of using mobile computing technology to monitor patients are countless. Firstly, this technology promotes the concept of preventive healthcare as it is characterized with frequent monitoring of vital signs, enhanced patient-doctor interactions, and enhanced information exchange. Another major advantage is that it makes healthcare accessible to even geographically remote patients who otherwise cannot obtain timely and improved healthcare services (Turisco & Case, 2001). Evidently, mobile computing increases the accuracy of patient records. Convenience of time is considered to be another notable benefit of application of mobile computing in healthcare. Since patients can monitor their vital signs from home using this technology, they need not to travel to hospitals frequently and can save their valuable time. Undoubtedly, this technology assists people to cut down healthcare costs including lab expenses and service charges. The mobile technology is helpful to identify various symptoms at the beginning stages so
